How to Register with the IMC as an EU/EEA Doctor

Registration with the Irish Medical Council is one of the first steps in relocating to Ireland as an EU/EEA Doctor. Relocating can be an exciting step in your career but before you can begin practicing you must ensure that you are correctly registered with the Irish Medical Council. Understanding the process early will help you plan your move with confidence and avoid unnecessary delays.

What is the IMC?

The Irish Medical Council regulates medical practice in Ireland. Registration ensures that all Doctors whether trained in Ireland or abroad – meet the highest professional standards. This process is key in ensuring safe and effective delivery of healthcare. If you studied and trained abroad, you must have your documents and medical degree verified by the electronic portfolio of international credentials (EPIC). You need this for Irish Medical Council registration.

There are two types of registration:

General: for non-consultant roles.

Specialist: for consultant roles or recognised specialist training.

Registering with the IMC is a mandatory step for EU/EEA Doctors planning to practice in Ireland. Ensure your documents are in order and allow at least 4-6 weeks for processing.
