Staff Occupational Therapist – CDNT
The Staff Occupational Therapist will work as part of a dynamic, multidisciplinary team within the Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT) in County Mayo. This role involves providing occupational therapy services to children and young people (0-18 years) with complex physical, sensory, intellectual, and developmental needs, and supporting their families. The aim is to enhance the child’s participation in daily activities and improve quality of life, with a family-centered, strengths-based approach.
Key Responsibilities of the Staff Occupational Therapist
- Perform comprehensive occupational therapy assessments of children with a range of developmental disabilities, including Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, and other complex needs.
- Develop individualized treatment plans based on assessment outcomes, focusing on promoting functional independence in daily activities.
- Use appropriate therapeutic interventions (e.g., sensory integration, motor skills development, ADLs training) to address physical, cognitive, and sensory challenges.
- Provide training and guidance to parents, carers, and educational staff to facilitate the child’s development in home, school, and community settings.
- Work closely with the multidisciplinary team (e.g., physiotherapists, speech and language therapists, psychologists, social workers) to deliver coordinated, holistic care for children.
- Attend regular team meetings, case conferences, and contribute to individualised family service plans (IFSPs) or team-around-the-child (TAC) meetings.
- Collaborate with external agencies such as schools, early intervention services, and voluntary organizations to ensure integrated service delivery.
- Empower families and caregivers through education and support, promoting understanding and management of the child’s condition.
- Provide advice and support on equipment needs, adaptations, and environmental modifications to promote accessibility and independence.
- Ensure parents are key partners in the goal-setting process and therapeutic journey.
- Maintain accurate, up-to-date clinical records in line with professional and HSE guidelines.
- Participate in clinical audits, evaluations, and service improvements to ensure high standards of care.
- Comply with all relevant regulatory and legislative requirements, including GDPR and child safeguarding policies.
- Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) activities, including training, workshops, and clinical supervision.
- Stay updated with the latest evidence-based practices in paediatric occupational therapy and disability services.
- Actively contribute to the mentoring and support of students or junior therapists, if required.
Qualifications & Experience of Staff Occupational Therapist
- BSc (Hons) in Occupational Therapy or equivalent recognized qualification.
- Current CORU registration as an Occupational Therapist.
- Proven experience working with children with disabilities, ideally in a multidisciplinary or team-based setting.
- Strong knowledge of child development, disability models of care, and pediatric occupational therapy interventions.
- Excellent communication, teamwork, and organizational skills.
- Full clean driving license and access to a car (as travel within the community may be required).
- Experience in a children’s disability network or early intervention setting.
- Knowledge or experience in sensory integration, assistive technology, or specialized seating/equipment.
- Previous experience in delivering family-centered care and working within a family-service model.
