Senior Speech & Language Therapist
The Senior Speech & Language Therapist will provide specialist assessment, diagnosis, and intervention for adults (or specify population) with communication and/or swallowing disorders within a mental health setting. The role involves working as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to support service users with complex psychological, cognitive, and social needs. We may also consider a strong Staff, this role is based in Portlaoise
Responsibilities of Senior Speech & Language Therapist
- Deliver specialist SLT assessments for individuals with mental health conditions (e.g., schizophrenia, dementia, acquired brain injury, eating disorders).
- Develop and implement person-centred intervention plans addressing communication and/or dysphagia needs.
- Provide interventions tailored to cognitive-communication difficulties, social communication, and functional communication.
- Manage a defined caseload, prioritising based on clinical need and service demands.
- Contribute to risk assessment and management, particularly regarding swallowing safety.
- Work collaboratively within MDTs including psychiatry, psychology, nursing, OT, and social work.
- Participate in case conferences, ward rounds, and care planning meetings.
- Provide specialist SLT input into discharge planning and community reintegration.
- Deliver training to MDT staff on communication strategies, dysphagia management, and inclusive practice.
- Promote awareness of communication needs in mental health populations.
- Contribute to policy development and implementation of best practice guidelines.
- Maintain accurate clinical records in line with professional and legal standards.
Requirements of Senior Speech & Language Therapist
- Degree or postgraduate qualification in Speech & Language Therapy.
- Registration with CORU
- Minimum 3 years post-qualification experience (or equivalent).
- Experience working with adults with complex needs.
- Demonstrated experience in mental health, neurorehabilitation, or related field.
