The Senior Speech and Language Therapist will provide specialized services to adults with physical and sensory disabilities across Dundalk, County Louth. The role involves assessing, diagnosing, and managing communication and swallowing disorders, developing individualized treatment plans, and supporting clients to achieve their highest level of independence and quality of life. Working as part of a multidisciplinary team, this role requires a high level of clinical expertise, leadership, and commitment to client-centered care.
Key Responsibilities of the Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- Conduct detailed assessments of communication and swallowing disorders in adults with complex physical and sensory disabilities.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized SLT intervention plans to support clients’ communication and swallowing needs.
- Provide direct therapy using evidence-based approaches for speech, language, voice, fluency, and swallowing disorders.
- Assessfor and support the use of assistive communication technologies, ensuring access and integration into clients’ lives.
- Address unique challenges associated with sensory and physical disabilities, such as hearing impairment, vision loss, and mobility limitations.
- Engage clients and their families in the therapeutic process, providing education and strategies to support communication and swallowing in everyday settings.
- Maintain accurate and timely clinical records, reports, and treatment plans in compliance with professional and legal requirements.
- Work closely with other professionals (Occupational Therapists, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Nurses, Psychologists, etc.) to develop holistic care plans that address the comprehensive needs of each client.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings, case conferences, and care planning discussions to ensure coordinated service delivery.
- Act as a resource to team members regarding communication and swallowing issues specific to the physical and sensory disability population.
- Provide clinical supervision, mentorship, and support to junior SLTs, SLT assistants, and students.
- Participate in quality improvement initiatives, audits, and evaluations to enhance service delivery.
- Lead and contribute to the development of clinical protocols, guidelines, and resources for the SLT department.
- Stay informed about advancements in the field and integrate evidence-based practice into service provision.
Key Requirements of a Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- A recognized degree in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Full registration with CORU as an SLT or eligibility for registration.
- Postgraduate qualification in relevant areas of dysphagia management, physical or sensory disabilities, or assistive technology is advantageous.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience as an SLT, with at least 2 years working specifically with adults with complex needs, ideally in the area of physical and sensory disabilities.
- Demonstrated experience with dysphagia management and assistive communication technology is essential.
- Previous experience in clinical supervision or mentoring of junior SLT staff is preferred.
