Senior Speech and Language Therapist
The Senior Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) is a core member of the interdisciplinary Children’s Disability Network Team in Carlow, they are responsible for delivering high-quality, family-centered speech and language therapy services to children and young people with complex disabilities. The role involves providing expert assessment, intervention, and support to children and their families, as well as guiding and mentoring junior therapists within the team. This position requires a focus on both direct clinical work and collaboration within a multi-disciplinary team to deliver integrated care in line with national disability service guidelines and practices.
Key Responsibilities of a Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- Conduct comprehensive assessments, diagnostic evaluations, and intervention planning for children with diverse and complex communication needs.
- Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized speech and language therapy programs based on evidence-based practices.
- Engage in goal-setting with families and team members, ensuring family-centered care and active participation from caregivers.
- Utilize a variety of intervention approaches, including direct therapy, group interventions, and consultative models as appropriate to each child’s needs.
- Take responsibility for a designated caseload, managing appointments, follow-up visits, and documentation in accordance with organizational policies.
- Liaise with other healthcare professionals, educational staff, and community agencies to ensure seamless service provision and coordination of care.
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, case discussions, and clinical reviews, contributing speech and language expertise to team decision-making.
- Provide mentorship, supervision, and support to junior SLTs, therapy assistants, and students as appropriate.
- Participate in continuous professional development (CPD) activities, including training sessions, conferences, and workshops.
- Contribute to the development and evaluation of policies, protocols, and resources related to speech and language therapy within the CDNT.
- Participate in service audits, quality improvement initiatives, and research activities aimed at enhancing service delivery.
- Keep up-to-date with developments in speech and language therapy, contributing ideas to innovate and improve therapy practices within the team.
- Implement evidence-based practice and ensure the application of current best practices in all aspects of service delivery.
- Support families in understanding and managing their child’s communication needs, providing education, resources, and emotional support as required.
- Advocate for the child’s needs within the CDNT, in educational settings, and in the broader community.
- Engage in community outreach and awareness initiatives, promoting inclusive environments for children with communication challenges.
Qualifications and Experience for a Senior Speech and Language Therapist
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy from an accredited program.
- Current CORU registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
- Experience: Minimum of 3 years of post-qualification experience in speech and language therapy, with ideally at least 2 years of experience working with children with disabilities.
- Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of child development, disabilities, and evidence-based approaches to speech and language therapy for pediatric populations.
