Senior Speech and Language Therapist
Clinical Duties:
- Assessment and Diagnosis: Perform comprehensive assessments for adults with neurological conditions, stroke, and other complex health needs affecting communication, cognition, and swallowing.
- Intervention and Treatment: Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized therapy plans that target speech, language, cognitive-communication, and swallowing difficulties.
- Case Management: Lead on the management of a complex neuro/stroke caseload, providing regular reviews, adjustments, and monitoring of patient progress.
- Multidisciplinary Collaboration: Work closely with a multidisciplinary team (MDT), including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, psychologists, doctors, and nursing staff, to ensure a holistic approach to patient care.
- Family and Caregiver Support: Provide education and advice to families and caregivers to support communication and safe swallowing strategies.
- Dysphagia Management: Conduct instrumental assessments, such as videofluoroscopy or FEES, to assess swallowing function and develop appropriate management plans.
- Documentation: Maintain accurate and timely records in accordance with professional standards and legal requirements.
Leadership and Supervision:
- Supervision and Mentorship: Provide supervision, mentorship, and support to junior therapists, therapy assistants, and students.
- Service Development: Contribute to the development and delivery of speech and language therapy services within the rehabilitation setting, including participation in audits, research, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Training and Education: Facilitate training sessions for MDT members and promote awareness of communication and swallowing issues within the hospital.
Professional Development:
- CPD and Training: Maintain professional development and knowledge of current best practices in neuro/stroke rehabilitation and speech and language therapy through ongoing learning, conferences, and professional networking.
- Compliance: Adhere to all clinical governance and safeguarding policies and procedures, maintaining a high standard of clinical practice in line with the HSE.
Essential Criteria
- Qualifications: Degree or equivalent in Speech and Language Therapy.
- Registration: Current CORU registration as a Speech and Language Therapist.
- Experience: Minimum of 3-5 years post-qualification experience, with significant experience in working with neuro/stroke caseloads in an adult setting.
- Dysphagia Competence: Demonstrated competence in managing swallowing disorders, including instrumental assessments.
- Teamwork: Strong experience in working within multidisciplinary teams.
- Communication: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- Leadership: Proven ability to manage a complex caseload, supervise staff, and contribute to service development.
Desirable Criteria
- Postgraduate Training: Specialist training or qualification in neuro/stroke rehabilitation, such as MSc or postgraduate certificates.
