Senior Physiotherapist – Acute Hospital
As a Senior Physiotherapist in my clients acute hospital, you will provide high-quality physiotherapy care across both acute medical inpatient units and a dedicated 16-bed rehabilitation ward and 55 acute medical inpatients. You will work closely with a multidisciplinary team to deliver patient-centered rehabilitation and therapeutic care that supports recovery and promotes independence.
This role requires clinical expertise in acute and rehabilitative physiotherapy, leadership in managing complex cases, and a proactive approach to service improvement and patient outcomes.
Key Responsibilities of Senior Physiotherapist
- Conduct comprehensive physiotherapy assessments for patients with complex medical, surgical, and rehabilitation needs.
- Develop, implement, and monitor individualized treatment plans aimed at maximizing patients’ functional recovery and independence.
- Utilize evidence-based practices to address conditions such as post-operative recovery, stroke rehabilitation, respiratory management, falls prevention, and mobility enhancement.
- Oversee physiotherapy services for the 16-bed rehabilitation ward, ensuring continuity and quality of care for patients transitioning from acute to rehabilitative care.
- Collaborate with the ward’s multidisciplinary team (MDT) – including occupational therapists, nurses, and social workers – to create and adjust holistic, patient-centered treatment plans.
- Engage in regular MDT meetings to discuss patient progress, discharge planning, and ongoing care needs.
- Provide physiotherapy support for the hospital’s 55 acute medical beds, addressing patients with acute conditions such as respiratory illnesses, post-surgical needs, and orthopedic injuries.
- Implement respiratory physiotherapy techniques, mobility training, and interventions to prevent complications from immobility, such as bedsores and pulmonary issues.
- Work closely with nursing staff and medical teams to ensure timely intervention and mobilization within acute care pathways.
- Actively participate in discharge planning by assessing patients’ readiness and need for continued physiotherapy support post-discharge.
- Liaise with community physiotherapists, primary care teams, and support services to ensure a seamless transition from hospital to home or other care settings.
- Supervise junior physiotherapists, physiotherapy assistants, and students, providing guidance, training, and regular feedback.
- Foster a supportive learning environment, encouraging continuous professional development and adherence to best practices within the team.
- Identify opportunities for service improvements within the physiotherapy department and propose initiatives to enhance patient care.
- Contribute to audits, data collection, and quality improvement projects aimed at optimizing rehabilitation outcomes and hospital efficiencies.
Experience of Senior Physiotherapist – Acute Hospital
- Education:
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Physiotherapy from an accredited program.
- Registration with CORU or equivalent regulatory body.
- Minimum of 3 years of clinical experience, with substantial experience in acute hospital settings, preferably including inpatient rehabilitation.
- Demonstrated expertise in managing complex cases in acute and rehabilitative physiotherapy, including conditions requiring respiratory management, neuro-rehabilitation, and musculoskeletal care.

- Skilled in advanced assessment techniques, evidence-based therapeutic interventions, and specialized areas like respiratory physiotherapy, neurology, and orthopedic care.
- Knowledge of geriatric rehabilitation and fall prevention strategies to enhance patient outcomes in older adult populations.
- Leadership and Teamwork:
- Proven ability to lead, mentor, and support junior team members, fostering a collaborative and learning-oriented department.
- Strong team player with experience working in an MDT, sharing insights and supporting a cohesive patient care approach.
