Senior Hand Therapist
The Senior Hand Therapist will provide a dedicated therapy service in the specialised areas of elective orthopaedic upper limb surgery and hand therapy. This service will be provided to both inpatient and outpatient client groups. The Senior Hand Therapist is an enthusiastic and competent professional with sound academic ability who is keen to develop their clinical skills.
The role of the Senior Hand Therapist includes but is not limited to
Organisational Relationships:
• To be professionally accountable to the Therapy Services Manager.
• To liaise and communicate effectively with multidisciplinary team members including orthopaedic and rheumatology consultants, nursing colleagues and the extended MDT.
• To liaise with statutory and voluntary agencies as appropriate.
• To assume responsibility for supervision of Staff Grade therapists, therapy students participating in practice education and any designated therapy assistants or support staff.
• To form good working relationships with other disciplines to ensure the provision of a high standard of care for the patient.
Professional Responsibilities:
• To be responsible for the day-to-day operation and co-ordination of the Hand Therapy service at in collaboration with the Therapy Services Manager and the Clinical Specialist Occupational Therapist in Hands.
• To participate in relevant planning activities to ensure that the therapy services provided are adequate and develop according to patients needs in consultant and agreement with the Therapy Services Manager and Orthopaedic/Rheumatology Consultants.
• To plan and carry out patient treatment for a specific caseload of clients as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• To advise, educate and instruct patients relatives as appropriate.
Requirement of a Hand Therapist – OT
• Possess a BSc (Hons) Degree in Occupational Therapy or Physiotherapy
• Be registered with CORU – Regulating Health and Social Care Professionals.
• Have at least three years post qualification experience with a minimum of 1 year specifically gained working in Upper Limb/Hand Therapy.
• Experience and expertise in Upper Limb/Hand splinting is desirable.
• Must have knowledge & expertise in the assessment, treatment and management of patients with Upper Limb pathology including patients following upper limb surgery.
