Position: Residential Social Care Leader
Reports to: Manager /Director
Location: Ballinteer – Co. Dublin – Ireland
Salary: €47,709 – €55,741(DOE) – (Level 7+ or ALT)
The role of Social Care Leader is a Senior position within the centre and is part of the wider Management team for the organisation. Supporting the manager and deputy in the day to day running of the unit.
In this management role you will hold your social care role which is to care for the children and young people, partnership with their families, the staff team, their social workers, and others involved in their care and the young people themselves. The main purpose is to meet the emotional, social physical, intellectual, spiritual, and cultural needs of young people.
- To take over responsibility for the day to day running of the centre in absence of the Manager and Deputy, in consultation with the Director.
- To provide leadership and guidance to staff, which is conducive to good staff relations and work performance in line with legislation, national standards and agency policies and procedures.
- To assist the Manager in supporting the team through changes and developments within the service and centre.
- To be an active member of the centres management team
- To oversee the upkeep of the premises.
- To ensure that an adequate supply of household goods is maintained.
- To ensure that there is a designated Fire Officer on the team and that regular fire drills are carried out and recorded and that any action required is followed up.
- To be vigilant and observant while on duty regarding Health and Safety, systems and childcare practise and take appropriate action to ensure that any follow up action that is required is carried out following discussion with the Manager.
- To assist the Manager in the induction of new staff.
- To ensure that all recording, care plans, significant event notifications and minutes are kept to a high standard and up graded when necessary and to supervise new staff in these tasks when needed.
- To participate in work reviews and philosophy/policy developments.
- To facilitate appropriate research of the centre’s work.
- To develop and oversee an extensive range of activities and programmes for the young people.
- To liaise with local organisations to facilitate access for the young people to attend local events and activities.
- To read and make note on all referrals which are to be considered for placement in the centre.
- To oversee budgeting and daily petty cash and the recording of same. To review systems and make appropriate suggestions for change or upgrading.
- To work under the direction and guidance of the Manager to ensure the highest standard of care practise is always maintained.
- To work as part of a team and to interact with other members of the team in a mutually respectful and professional manner.
- To be fully informed of the Children First, the Standards and Regulations and any other relevant documents underpinning our work.
- To undertake relevant training and to adhere to the principles and practises of the programme for each young person and in the daily care of same. To participate in regular updates and refresher training.
- To ensure that all information relating to the young people, their families, professionals, and staff colleagues is treated in a thoroughly professional manner and that confidentiality is strictly always maintained.
- To be familiar with and carry out any recording of accounts as designated by the Manager.
- To partake in the development and implementation of a Care Plan, Placement Plan for each young person, which has been tailored to their needs and which is reviewed regularly. To actively refer to these plans and use as a focus and influence in their daily interactions with the young people.
- To undertake, when requested, the role of Key Worker/Case worker and work through this task following the policies and procedures around Key Working as defined and governed by good practise and principles and the ethos of the service.
- To fully understand and become proficient in the designated recording and reporting, accountability system in operation in the unit as designated by the Manager.
- To report immediately to the Manager any incidence of malpractice by a staff member in relation to the treatment of the young people in our care.
- To take responsibility for the safe operation of the unit when leading or working on shift in accordance with all appropriate policies and guidelines.
- To ensure all necessary cleaning and tasks related to the upkeep of the house are carried out while on shift.
- To ensure the young people in our care receive healthy, well-prepared food and participate in the preparation of meals while on duty, in line with Health and Safety recommendations.
- To accept and understand and be responsible for any monies or petty cash procedures necessary for the efficient running of the shift.
- To ensure, in liaison with the social worker and other relevant parties, that the young people have regular contact with their family, significant others, friend s and community.
- To be fully aware of the policies and care practised and guidelines of the unit and to actively implement these policies in the day to day running off the unit.
- To provide proper care and supervision of the young people in our care, both while in the home and while engaged in outside activity.
- To respect each young person’s religious, cultural, and ethnic background and to facilitate personal practises in relation to these where appropriate.
- To liaise with other relevant professionals in the young person’s life to ensure that all their needs are being appropriately addressed.
- To protect each young person from bullying and intimidation and to act swiftly and according to procedure when necessary to deal with a situation in relation to this.
- To develop a caring but healthy, professional relationship with the young people to encourage and assist them, to deal with whatever problems or issues may arise for them. To do this in a therapeutic, understanding, and thoughtful way in a milieu conducive to best practise always.
- To ensure that each young person’s personal property is stored safely.
- To participate in any ongoing staff training which may be introduced from time to time, including First Aid Training
- To receive and actively participate in regular supervision and undertake to work on any practise related issues that may arise in this learning process and supportive process.
- To be fully aware of the units Health and Safety document and be responsible for same when on duty.
- Minimum level 7 Social Care
- Alternative Qualifications Accepted:
- Level 8 in Psychology
- Level 7 in Child and Adolescent Psychotherapy
- Level 7 in Counselling
- Professional qualification in:
- Youth and Community Work
- Social Work
- Social Sciences Teaching & Nursing
- Addiction studies
- Candidates must have no less than 3 years’ experience working in social care with children / young people.
- Full Clean Drivers’ license (ideally)
