Occupational Therapist – Adult Mental Health
The Occupational Therapist will provide assessment, treatment, and discharge planning for adults admitted to an acute mental health admissions unit nased in Mullingar, Co Westmeath. The role focuses on enabling service users to develop, recover, or maintain the skills required for independent living, meaningful occupation, and community participation following an acute mental health episode.
The post holder will work as part of a multidisciplinary team (MDT) to deliver recovery-focused, person-centred care. I will accept a Staff or a Senior.
Responsibilities of Occupational Therapist – Adult Mental Health
- Conduct comprehensive occupational therapy assessments of patients admitted to the unit, including occupational history, functional ability, and psychosocial needs.
- Identify occupational performance difficulties related to mental health conditions.
- Develop and implement individualised treatment plans based on recovery goals.
- Deliver individual and group-based therapeutic interventions, which may include:
- Activities of daily living (ADL) skills
- Emotional regulation
- Stress management
- Cognitive and executive functioning
- Social skills development
- Structured activity and routine building
- Facilitate therapeutic groups within the ward programme.
- Support patients to engage in meaningful occupation during their inpatient stay.
- Contribute to discharge planning and recovery pathways.
- Assess functional readiness for discharge.
- Liaise with community teams regarding ongoing occupational therapy needs.
- Provide recommendations for community supports, housing, vocational services, or rehabilitation.
- Participate in MDT meetings, ward rounds, and care planning reviews.
- Provide occupational therapy perspective within care discussions.
- Assess and monitor functional risks relating to independent living.
- Contribute to risk management plans.
- Maintain awareness of safeguarding procedures.
- Maintain accurate clinical records and reports in accordance with organisational policies.
- Complete assessments, care plans, and discharge summaries.
Requirements of Occupational Therapist – Adult Mental Health
- Degree or MSc in Occupational Therapy
- Registration with CORU
- Experience working in mental health services (placement or post-qualified).
- Experience conducting occupational therapy assessments and interventions.
