Occupational Therapist
We are currently seeking an experienced Occupational Therapist to join Intellectual Disability Services covering Longford and Westmeath. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated and skilled OT to work within a community-based service supporting adults with intellectual disabilities to maximise independence, participation, and quality of life.
The successful candidate will work as part of a supportive multidisciplinary team, delivering person-centred, evidence-based occupational therapy interventions across a range of community, residential, and day service settings.
The Role
This role involves managing a diverse and complex caseload of adults with intellectual disabilities, including individuals with associated physical, sensory, and behavioural needs. The post holder will complete functional assessments, support skill development, recommend environmental adaptations, and provide specialist input around daily living, sensory integration, and meaningful occupation.
The role requires travel across Longford and Westmeath, therefore access to a car and a full driving licence are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide high-quality occupational therapy assessment and intervention for adults with intellectual disabilities
- Develop and implement individualised, person-centred care plans in collaboration with service users, families, and carers
- Support individuals to maximise independence in activities of daily living, community participation, and vocational skills
- Complete functional assessments and recommend appropriate interventions, equipment, and environmental adaptations
- Work collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team to ensure coordinated, holistic care
- Provide education, guidance, and support to families, carers, and support staff
- Maintain accurate clinical documentation in line with professional and organisational standards
- Contribute to service development, quality improvement initiatives, and best practice
Essential Criteria
- Registration with CORU as an Occupational Therapist
- Minimum of 2–3 years post-qualification experience, with relevant experience in intellectual disability services
- Experience working with adults with intellectual disabilities and complex needs
- Strong clinical reasoning, organisational, and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Full, clean driving licence and access to a car
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in community-based intellectual disability services
- Experience supporting individuals with complex physical or sensory needs
- Experience providing training or guidance to families and support staff
- Experience contributing to service development or multidisciplinary initiatives
