Senior Medical Social Worker
The Senior Medical Social Worker will provide a high-quality, child- and family-centred social work service to children and young people with disabilities and their families. The post holder will work as an integral member of the multidisciplinary Children’s Disability Network Team (CDNT), providing specialist assessment, intervention, advocacy and support.
Key Responsibilities of Senior Medical Social Worker
- Undertake social work assessments, identifying strengths, needs, risks and protective factors.
- Provide appropriate interventions including family support, counselling, advocacy and practical assistance.
- Support families experiencing stress, adjustment difficulties, social isolation or challenges associated with disability.
- Contribute to multidisciplinary assessment, care planning and review.
- Manage an appropriate caseload and maintain accurate clinical records.
- Respond appropriately to child protection and safeguarding concerns in line with legislation, Children First and organisational policy.
- Contribute to risk assessment and management.
- Develop effective, respectful relationships with children, young people, parents and carers.
- Advocate for children and families and support access to appropriate statutory, community and voluntary services.
- Provide information and support regarding relevant services, benefits, entitlements and resources.
- Support families through key transitions and changes in circumstances.
Requirements of Senior Medical Social Worker
- Recognised professional qualification in Social Work.
- Current registration with CORU as a Social Worker.
- Significant post-qualification social work experience.
- Experience working with children, young people and/or families.
- Experience of multidisciplinary and interagency working.
- Knowledge and experience of child protection and safeguarding.
- Excellent communication, assessment, advocacy and organisational skills.
- Ability to work independently while contributing effectively to a multidisciplinary team.
Desirable Experience
- Experience in a CDNT, children’s disability, paediatric or medical setting.
- Experience working with children with complex disabilities or healthcare needs.
- Experience supervising or mentoring social work staff/students.
- Experience in service development or quality improvement.
