Job Overview
The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) has responsibility for supporting the leadership and organisation of the nursing home. This includes establishing and maintaining a high standard of residential care and activities in alignment with best national and international practices, while considering available resources.
The ADON works closely with and supports the Director of Nursing (DON) in managing all staff and ensuring compliance and statutory regulations. The role also focuses on building and sustaining positive relationships with residents based on principles of respect, dignity, and equality.
The ADON reports directly to the Director of Nursing or their delegated representative.
Duties & Responsibilities
Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- In the absence of the Director of Nursing, assume the role and duties as outlined by the Health Act 2007, associated regulations, and HIQA National Quality Standards.
- Support and assist the DON in overseeing the organisation, management, and day-to-day operations of the nursing home.
- Provide leadership, guidance, and clinical supervision to nursing and care staff to enhance standards of care and team morale.
- Maintain high standards of professional conduct and practice to create a person-centred, caring environment that supports the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs of residents.
- Safeguard residents by protecting them from any form of abuse or neglect and ensure appropriate reporting procedures are followed.
- Deliver a consistently high standard of care that respects the privacy, dignity, and individuality of all residents.
- Support the organisation of the nursing home, ensuring appropriate staffing levels and the highest standards of care delivery.
- Act as a clinical resource for nursing staff and remain informed of developments and changes in nursing care practices.
- Contribute to professional development initiatives and service improvement.
- Foster a positive learning environment and encourage open communication and discussion among staff.
- Be available to work day, night, and weekend shifts as required.
Education & Qualifications
- Third Level Degree in Nursing.
- Registered with The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Ireland (NMBI) and hold an active PIN.
- Current and valid certificates in:
- Infection Control
- Manual Handling & Resident Moving and Handling
- Medication Management
- Dementia Care
- CPR
- Safeguarding of Vulnerable Adults
(Training can be provided if required.) - Post-registration qualification in Healthcare Management or equivalent is essential.
- Candidates without this qualification will be required to undertake relevant training.
- Post-registration qualification in Gerontology or Dementia Care is desirable.
Skills & Experience
- Minimum 6 years’ post-registration nursing experience.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a nursing home environment.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a management or supervisory role.
- Demonstrated experience in leading, motivating, and supporting an effective team.
- Proven clinical competence and a genuine passion for delivering outstanding care to older people.
