Mandatory Training for Locum Doctors in Ireland
To be eligible for locum work in Ireland doctors must complete mandatory training courses. The HSE require all doctors working in Ireland to be fully up to date with training requirements, some of which vary depending on specialty. Many of the HSEland training courses are available online and provided free of charge.
Additionally, to work as a locum doctors must have the right to work in Ireland without a work permit.
- They must be Irish/UK/EU passport holders OR
- Stamp 4 or Stamp 1G Irish Residency Permit holders
The HSE’s Mandatory Training List:
The following training courses are required for both Consultant and NCHD doctors.
- Cyber Security Cert (HSEland)
- Open Disclosure – Applying Principles to Practice (HSEland)
- Communicating Effectively through Open Disclosure (HSEland)
- Children’s First Cert (HSEland)
- Hand Hygiene Cert (HSEland)
- The Fundamentals of GDPR Cert (HSEland)
- Patient Moving and Handling cert (Practical)
- Patient Moving and Handling cert (Theory Online) (HSEland)
- BLS (on-site training)
- Practical Fire Safety Awareness Cert (on-site training)
- Haemovigilance Training (NHS Learn pro)

Additional training requirements might apply depending on your area of practice.
- Introduction to Sepsis Management for Adults including Maternity (HSEland) (All staff working in acute care settings involved in the early recognition and treatment of sepsis in both the pregnant and non-pregnant adults).
- Paediatric Early Warning System (PEWS) (Practical)
- Emergency Medicine Early Warning System (EMEWS) (HSEland)
- Irish Maternity Early Warning System (IMEWS) (HSEland)
- Irish National Early Warning System (INEWS) (HSEland) (All, except Pathology – EWS certification as relevant to the specialty)
- Mental Health Act 2001 (Psychiatry only)
- MAPA / CPI (Practical) (Psychiatry only)
- ACLS (on-site) (Required for all carrying the cardiac alert bleep as well as Cardiology, Anaesthetics and – Emergency Medicine)
- Radiation Protection
- APLS – Practical (Paediatric hospitals or departments)
