Senior Occupational Therapist
The Senior Occupational Therapist will provide advanced therapeutic interventions to patients in an acute hospital setting. This role involves assessing, planning, and implementing high-quality occupational therapy services, supporting patient recovery, and promoting independence. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to ensure the best outcomes for patients.
Key Responsibilities of a Senior Occupational Therapist
- Perform comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, cognitive, emotional, and social abilities.
- Develop and implement individualized treatment plans to promote functional independence.
- Provide specialist advice and intervention for patients with complex needs in areas such as orthopaedics, neurology, respiratory, and oncology.
- Monitor and evaluate patient progress, adapting interventions as necessary.
- Ensure seamless transition and discharge planning, including referrals to community services where appropriate.
- Lead and supervise a team of junior occupational therapists, therapy assistants, and students.
- Provide clinical supervision and mentorship, fostering professional growth within the team.
- Contribute to the induction and training of new staff members.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, participating in case reviews and ward rounds.
- Lead or contribute to service audits, research projects, and quality improvement initiatives.
- Implement evidence-based practices to enhance patient care and service efficiency.
- Develop and deliver training programs for hospital staff on relevant occupational therapy topics.
- Contribute to policy and procedure development within the occupational therapy department.
Essential Requirements of Senior Occupational Therapist
- Degree in Occupational Therapy (or equivalent qualification recognized by CORU).
- Current registration with CORU as an Occupational Therapist.
- Minimum of three years post-qualification experience, with at least 2 years in an acute hospital setting.
- Demonstrated expertise in assessing and managing complex clinical cases.
- Proven ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
Desirable Attributes
- Postgraduate training or qualifications in a relevant area (e.g., neurological rehabilitation, hand therapy, etc.).
- Experience in service development and leading quality improvement initiatives.
- Strong leadership and mentoring skills.
- Knowledge of HSE frameworks, policies, and guidelines.
